![]() But if engagement is your goal, keep things to a minimum. There is certainly a time and place for extra details to help engineering and design teams. We then flesh out the main supporting quotes, sprinkled with storytelling elements and supporting b-roll where needed.įinally, we go through a process of paring down any unnecessary video, word by word, to get to the essence of what needs to be communicated. We start by identifying the key learning/insight spaces. When creating research videos, we throw our story into a barebones script template. Rule #22 : What’s the essence of your story? Most economical telling of it? If you know that, you can build out from there. Be open to testing a new approach if it has the potential to produce the best possible output, instead of constantly re-tweaking a presentation to the point where it’s over-budget, over-timeline and overly-formulaic. When an approach is aligned on, focus on creating the best possible presentation with the constraints given to you. This process contrasts with the design-by-committee many creatives encounter in the consulting space. Rule #18 : You have to know yourself: the difference between doing your best & fussing. In many instances, the engagement those particular respondents can create with the audience will outweigh the potential risks of alienating them with their strong opinions. When editing, I often struggle to strike a balance between engagement and compliance. There can be a fear of creating too many waves. When pulling together films, researchers sometimes shy away from including that strongly opinionated or emotional respondent. Passive/malleable might seem likable to you as you write, but it’s poison to the audience. Rule #13 : Give your characters opinions. Some of the best presentations require some serious ego checks. I assumed it added polish to the video, but it just ended up distracting the audience. It can be incredibly difficult to shut off that part of our brain and empathize with what can engage our audience.īack when I first created research films, I focused a decent amount of my time adding ambient background music to reflect the mood of what I was trying to communicate. We often bias our presentations to reflect the topics we are interested in. Rule #2 : You gotta keep in mind what’s interesting to you as an audience, not what’s fun to do as a writer. Many are nearly impossible to adapt to a business-related presentation or video, but here are a few that really resonated with me. I thought of ways these guidelines could be applied to our work. ![]() So what's their formula for success? In 2012, Emma Coats, a storyboard artist for Pixar tweeted 22 guidelines that Pixar follows when crafting the story for their films. Nearly all of their movies (24 of 26) are certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. They are one of the most successful creative enterprises ever, owning 14 of the top 50 highest grossing animated films. Ever since Toy Story dropped when I was 10 years old, I've been fascinated with Pixar movies. ![]() ![]() ![]() Īlthough the term "free rider" was first used in economic theory of public goods, similar concepts have been applied to other contexts, including collective bargaining, antitrust law, psychology, political science, and vaccines. In each of these examples, the cost of excluding non-payers would be prohibitive, while the collective consumption of the resource does not decrease how much is available. The number of viewers, whether they paid for the entertainment or not, does not diminish the fireworks as a resource. A third example of non-excludable and non-rivalrous consumption would be a crowd watching fireworks. Another example is if a coastal town builds a lighthouse, ships from many regions and countries will benefit from it, even though they are not contributing to its costs, and are thus "free riding" on the navigation aid. Ī free rider may enjoy a non-excludable and non-rivalrous good such as a government-provided road system without contributing to paying for it. These characteristics of a public good result in there being little incentive for consumers to contribute to a collective resource as they enjoy its benefits. Non-rival consumption stipulates that the use of a good or service by one consumer does not reduce its availability for another consumer. Non-excludable means that non-payers cannot be stopped from getting use of or benefits from the good. The free-rider problem is common with public goods which are non-excludable and non-rivalrous. Such an example is the free-rider problem of when property rights are not clearly defined and imposed. The free-rider problem in social science is the question of how to limit free riding and its negative effects in these situations. Additionally, it has been shown that despite evidence that people tend to be cooperative by nature (a prosocial behaviour), the presence of free-riders causes cooperation to deteriorate, perpetuating the free-rider problem. Consequently, the common pool resource may be under-produced, overused, or degraded. Free riders are a problem for common pool resources because they may overuse it by not paying for the good (either directly through fees or tolls or indirectly through taxes). Examples of such goods are public roads or public libraries or services or other goods of a communal nature. In the social sciences, the free-rider problem is a type of market failure that occurs when those who benefit from resources, public goods and common pool resources do not pay for them or under-pay. ![]() If you make it a point to name your JPEG images before uploading them, Flickr is smart enough to name your uploaded photos with the same name as your file without the JPG extension. You may argue that Flickr holds much more data (IPTC, and more EXIF fields) than PBase, but pixel peepers (like me) prefer to have the convenience of all the images display in the Original size from the get go, and use our own EXIF tool of choice to peek at the underlying data. In other words, it’s not generally a cool idea to host photos on Flickr for the viewing pleasure of pixel peepers. Then click on the Back to the Flickr photo page link, click the next photo, and repeat the entire process. You’d then have to click on the All Sizes link above the photo, which shows you the Large version, and then click on Original to view the full-sized photo. In the case of Flickr, clicking on a thumbnail shows you only the medium sized version. You’d need to then click on the Original link found beneath the photo in order to see it full-sized, but this preference is remembered on your computer and will be in effect for subsequent images. On Pbase, especially if you’ve never visited PBase before, the default image size presented to you when you click on a thumbnail is Large. Also, I’ve elected to denote sub-galleries with double colons (::) on the left and right of the sub-gallery title. You can create nice hierarchies of galleries in PBase.įor comparison, see this gallery of full-sized Nikon D70 photos on Pbase, vs. It’s very easy to do - just navigate to an existing gallery, enter the name of the new gallery, and indicate whether the new gallery should be a child of the current gallery, or appear at the home page. The plot is simple protagonist Joel has been tasked with transporting Ellie – a girl seemingly immune to the cordyceps that have caused the apocalypse – across the country. However, The Last of Us Part 1 is defined more by its character arcs and interactions than it is by an overarching story. On the other hand, I’d argue that, in true Naughty Dog fashion, the story in The Last of Us Part 1 is going to be the core impetus driving you along to finishing the game. "If you’re looking for some incredibly strong character writing that makes good use of a unique zombie apocalypse as its backdrop to tell a heartfelt and personal story, The Last of Us Part 1 absolutely delivers on that front," The moment you’re seen by a single fellow, just about every other enemy is going to come down on you with all the firepower they can muster. ![]() The sandbox-styled encounters in the game can be quite fun, especially against human enemies but the general experience is hampered by the game’s incredibly basic stealth mechanics that only really gives you one real chance to be caught. Tinkering with the game’s various graphical options – of which there are quite a few – didn’t really help that much, at most pushing my frame rate up from an average of 55 while on high settings to 65 on medium. ![]() Both of my desktop and Steam Deck play sessions were interrupted quite often with crashes. While running the game on Windows 11 was quite painful, the Steam Deck suffered even more stuttering issues and low frame rates, which isn’t too surprising considering the limited hardware on the handheld system when compared to my desktop. "Both of my desktop and Steam Deck play sessions were interrupted quite often with crashes." Even the incredibly-linear opening section of the game has the frame rate dip down quite a bit, especially once things start catching fire in the game’s environments. Unfortunately, the shader caching was an arduous process that took my PC well over an hour to complete.ĭuring gameplay, it manages to look quite well with DLSS or FSR running, but various effects in the environment tend to be affect frame rate. When you first boot up the game, you will be greeted with a loading screen that almost goes on forever, and a laggy main menu since the title is caching its shaders in the background and getting you ready for a potential smoother experience. With that in mind, I don’t think there’s much of an excuse for The Last of Us Part 1 to run as badly as it does. These specs are well within range of the recommended specs found on The Last of Us Part 1’s Steam page. ![]() To lay the groundwork, I played the game on a Windows 11 PC running on an AMD Ryzen 5 3500, 32GB of RAM, an Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti, and the game was installed on a SATA SSD. "The shader caching was an arduous process that took my PC well over an hour to complete." And while the PS5 release was a great new way to play the classic, the PC version is unfortunately the worst version of the game by far. It doesn’t really bring many changes to the original’s mix of stealth and adventure gameplay, instead focusing on bringing its visuals and presentation up to par modern standards. Having played through the original a number of times, how does the game hold up on a PC? Let’s find out.įirst things first, as we noted in our review of the PS5 release of The Last of Us Part 1, the remake is an incredibly faithful one.
